Dr. Bharat Bhagat

Health and Care Foundation

Dr. Bharat Bhagat, professionally a surgeon, started his private practice at the age of 29 and undertook social work starting at the age of 32. He served as Hon. surgeon in a General Hospital for 29 years and retired as Hon. Asst. Professor of surgery.

He has been associated with multiple social organizations, but for the last two decades, he has focused on the HEALTH AND CARE FOUNDATION (formerly known as Polio Foundation). He established this organization in 1984-85 in a very informal way, but when people started donating he established a Formal Trust in 1987 and he is the Founder Chairman of this Trust. He was the pioneer in eradicating polio in India. The Health and Care Foundation Trust has units for Pediatric Corrective Surgery, Cerebral Palsy, a Center for Diabetes, a full-fledged Ophthalmology Department with all facilities under one roof including ROP, Dialysis center, Women Wellness Clinic for screening of breast and cervical cancer, Dental care, ENT, Corrective Spine Surgery and other services.

Most care is either free of cost or at affordable cost.


  1. Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation made its first public private partnership with Dr Bhagat, and provided Hospital building in city at token rent of Rs 100 per year since 1992.
  2. Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority provided 6000 sq yard land free of cost in city to the Trust. This is very uncommon.
  3. Big Institution constructed through public support only for hospital.
  4. Former President A P J ABDUL KALAM visited the hospital and appreciated its activities.
  5. A team of surgeons from the USA AND UK are visiting and operating on regular basis.
  6. Government has approved the hospital as nodal for District Early Intervention Centre to treat 28 health conditions for children below the age of18. Trained more than 1800 Government Medical Officers.

  • National award by All India Lions Co-ordination Committee for outstanding social work.

  • Gurjar Ratna Award in 2007.
  • Selected by Divya Bhaskar, a leading Newspaper of Gujarat, in 100 Power Personalities of Gujarat in 2009 and 2011.
  • Lions Recognition Medal in 2010 – first Indian to receive the same and only third in the world.
