Hasiru Dala (Green Force) is a member-based organization of waste pickers in Bangalore. The organization is operating to improve the working conditions of informal economy workers, ensure their continued access to livelihoods, and claim the recognition these silent environmentalists deserve. Wastepickers able to divert 1050 tons of waste for recycling everyday and help Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike ( local Government) save INR 840 million annually.
Hasiru Dala seeks to secure for them the benefits of the various government programs – they are entitled to, social security provisions they need to advance the quality of their lives and to enhance educational opportunities for their children. The membership is extended to all waste workers i.e. waste-pickers,waste sorters and itinerant waste buyers; a majority of whom are women.Through its work in past three years Hasiru Dala has been able to facilitate Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Pallike (BBMP) authorized identity cards for more than 6000 waste pickers in the city. It is 30 operating dry waste aka recyclable waste collection centers with erstwhile waste workers as their managers. In addition to that the organization also functions as door to door waste management service provider to more than 6000 households.
In the years to come Hasiru Dala aspires to become a full-fledged cooperative with minimum dependence on external institutions for resources. And achieve formal inclusion of informal waste workers in solid waste management services through law. It also plans to expand its operation for door to door waste collection service across the city. Supporting offspring of waste workers to make better and informed career choices is also in the list of its goals. For that helping the children earn good quality education is a full-fledged program Hasiru Dala aims to inaugurate soon.
