InSPIRE Skit at the ICA Annual 2009

1) InSPIRE Promo Video – http://blip.tv/file/577454/
Part 1 – Before InSPIRE
Narrator (Rahul B.): “Before InSPIRE…”
(Divya, Sumi, Neal, Asha, Raj, and Sushil are standing in different parts of the stage)
Divya: “I’ve been to India before with my parents, and I’ve went sight-seeing and been in AC cars… but I know there’s more. What is the real India like?” (just an example)
Sumi: Her line
Raj: “While I am out in India exploring and working with NGO’s, I feel like I’m doing something meaningful and I feel at peace. How can I maintain this feeling no matter where I am?”
Asha: Her line
Sushil: His line
Neal: His line
Everyone: “I have been given this life, how can I make it meaningful?”
For that part… each person has to come up with ONE sentence and ONE question that describes what they were thinking/feeling before InSPIRE… what motivated them to do InSPIRE. Please email this to me by WEDNESDAY!
Part 2
Narrator: Coming into InSPIRE, all the participants and coordinators have their own questions that they want answered. But the common question is: “How can I make my life meaningful?” They then go through experiences that help them explore that question.
Scene 1: Little boy at Manav Sadhna takes Sumi’s plate and washes it for her. Sumi is writing this scene out. Please email this to me by THURSDAY! (just short scene)
Scene 2: No lights on stage. Divya reads a journal entry that she wrote in India after the Jamghat Nightwalk. Divya, make sure you find this journal entry and bring it with you on Sunday. Check if it will need any extra explanation by you, or by the narrator…. Should the narrator talk about what Jamghat is afte the journan entry?
Scene 3: Everyone on stage. Sumi sings “Vandana Unki Kaho” (or other “InSPIRE song) while the rest of us are her background singers. Singing has become a big part of InSPIRE. =)
Part 3
Narrator: After going through these experiences that touch their heart, and make them think in ways they have never thought before… the participants come back….
Each person bring in ONE object that symbolizes a change/adjustment that you’ve made in your life. Please email what you are bringing by THURSDAY.
Divya: (example) I found these pants in my mom’s closet. You might be wondering why I was looking in my mom’s closet. Well, this year I decided that I’m not going to buy any new clothes because….
Sumi: Mmmm.. the sweet smell of basil now fills my kitchen. I started garnding because…
Raj:
Asha:
Sushil:
Neal:
Narrator: Once there has been a shift in consciousness… there are struggles as well.
Short Career Choices Skit
Phone Call 1 —
Friend 1: “So, you’re graduating next month, what are you going to do after college?”
InSPIRant: “Well.. are you asking me what I REALLY WANT to do… or what I’m going to do?”
Friend 1: “What do you mean?”
InSPIRant: “The voice inside me… is telling me that I need to be in India… at Adharshila… working with the adivasi children there. That environment… those children… I’ve just never felt like that before.”
Friend 1: “What do your parents think about that?”
InSPIRant: “They said that I need to stop thinking about others and I need to think about my own happiness first. They think that I can worry about the rest of the world later on… when I get older.”
Friend 1: “True..”
InSPIRant: “But.. they don’t understand…. THIS is for me! I just know it…. that being in India, doing this work IS going to make me truly happy… I feel like I’d be doing something meaningful… And, right now.. I’m young… I’m healthy… I can make a difference.”
Friend 1: “Well, good luck… I have to go.. I have an interview with Goldman Sachs tomorrow…”
InSPIRant: “Bye.”
Phone Call 2 —
InSPIRant: “Hi mom, how are you?”
Dad: “Hi beti, so did you send your resume to Paresh Uncle, Montu Uncle, and Girish Uncle?
InSPIRant: “Not yet dad.”
Dad: “Well, you should hurry. You are not going to just find a job by doing nothing. You have to work at it.”
InSPIRant: “Dad… you know my heart’s not into this. I want to go to Adharshila after college and work there for a while.”
Dad: “Beti… I understand… but you have to be practical. The first priority… is that you have to have financial security. If you don’t have financial security, then how are you going to help people?
InSPIRant: “I’m not worried about that. I’m educated and when I need money, I know that I’ll be able to find a job or find a way to earn my living. And, I have some money saved up already because I worked during college.”
Dad: “Look, Beti… you also have to start looking for a boyfriend, too. You can’t waste time in India.”
InSPIRant: “But, I don’t feel like I’m wasting time dad!”
Dad: “Beti, you’re still young… don’t get angry… Think about this practically. Later on in life, you can send money to NGO’s in India, and you can even go there and work there.”
InSPIRant: “Okay… I have to go now… I have to study for a midterm tomorrow. I’ll talk to you later.
Dad: “Love you beta.”
InSPIRant: “Love you.”
Narrator: What do you think this young adult should do? (somehow get audience participation.. have them talk to each other… or vote… or something..)
