Dr. Digant Amte

Lok Biradari Hospital

Dr Digant Amte vowed publicly in 1998 to join footsteps of his illustrious parents, Padmashree Dr Prakash and Dr Mandakini Amte. Staying true to his words, he joined Lok Biradari Prakalp at Hemalkasa in 2003 as medical officer in 2002 after completing his medical education. He dedicated his life to improving the health and education of tribal people affected by unjust government regulations and atrocities.

Dr Digant took many innovative initiatives to benefit life of tribal patients. He improved the operation theatre by adding modern medical facilities. He also increased the number of surgical camps, collaborating with local and international surgeons. One of Dr Digant’s novel projects was popularizing male sterilization operations started by his father, making Bhamragad Tehsil one of the very few Tehsils to have male sterilization operations. Dr Digant also trains young medical doctors in this operation.

Dr DIgant is currently in charge of a modern hospital built in the heart of the tribal area catering to more than 40,000 patients annually. He also runs a School Health Awareness program which includes hygiene awareness, sex education, and de-addiction motivation. He has convinced a village to stop selling palm tree liquor, and is planning to start a palm jaggery manufacturing unit in that village.

Dr. Digant, with his wife, Dr Anagha, were guest speakers at the Holland-based Foundation for Critical Choices for India on the topic of educating girls from Rural India.

Dr Digant has received the Dnyaneshwar Award from the Dnyaneshwar Pratishthan from Mumbai, and the Ahinsa award from the Nakoda Group in Solapur.
