Duncan Steele

Duncan Steele is the Deputy Director and Strategic Lead for Enteric Vaccines, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Duncan is a South African trained microbiologist with extensive experience in virology and microbiology, especially for diarrheal diseases, and has mentored students and postgraduates across the African continent. He is the author of more than 270 scientific publications on diarrheal diseases, epidemiology, clinical research and vaccine development.

His current responsibilities include strategic leadership and oversight of a portfolio of vaccines against the major enteric and diarrheal diseases (that is, rotavirus, cholera, enteric fever, enterotoxigenic E coli, and Shigella). The goal of the team is to facilitate development and clinical evaluation of these vaccines, and support the safe and effective implementation of the vaccines in vulnerable populations at highest risk of disease.
