Improving Health Care in Tribal Areas

Dr. Shrey Desai is a research coordinator and physician at SEWA Rural. Dr. Desai completed his MD (Medicine) from Saint Barnabas Medical Center Livingston, New Jersey and Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, Maryland. After a brief work experience at World Health Organization in the Caribbean, he returned to India in 2010 and started working at SEWA Rural.

SEWA Rural is a voluntary development organization that started in 1980 involved in health & development activities in rural, and tribal area of Gujarat. Dr. Shrey Desai and his team at SEWA Rural have developed, implemented and evaluated innovative technology-based solutions to critical public health problems facing tribal communities such as infant mortality, undernutrition, sickle cell disease and menstrual health.

SEWA Rural’s focus areas include health care delivery, training, advocacy and research along with improving employability of tribal youth and women empowerment. SEWA Rural has received prestigious awards such as inaugural Sasakawa Award by the World Health Organization, and MacArthur Award for being creative and effective organization for improving health of mothers and newborn babies in India.
